"Against All Odds: Managing Change in Polish Post-Communist Power Generation Companies"

Since 1989 Poland has been going through rapid economic transformation. Power generation is a good example of traditional business that has to be more customer and efficiency-focused. It means that over 150,000 employees, with an average age of 48 and industry experience of over 20 years are expected to act, work and take decisions in a completely different way.

At the same time, little incentive to change exist. Companies are in relatively comfortable financial position and status quo for employees is strengthened by 5-10 year job guarantees. An average industry salary is almost 2 times higher than Polish average. Once new CEO arrives with the mission to turn such fossilized organization upside-down he needs to be persistent and careful, facing several dilemmas accompanying the transformation.

The presentation will highlight the dilemmas as well as give examples of solutions applied to make things happen. Lessons learned come from real-life cases of transformation of Polish power generation companies.

Key Takeaways:

  1. How to justify need for change when company is in a comfortable situation?

  2. How to build a "critical mass" of people, who would support painful and deep changes in the place they've been ever working and find change leaders among them?

  3. What are key roles and duties of the new CEO introducing change in complacent environment?

  4. What makes successful change in fossilized organization?
