"Start Me Up! - Building a Transformational Change Mgmt Practice in 3 Years and Across 3 Dimensions"

In 2009, Symantec Corporation made the strategic decision to start a cross-functional transformation initiative focused on enhancing customer and partner experiences. The transformation entailed significant changes to internal and external systems and processes. With no formal change management practice or role established within the company, Symantec established a Center of Excellence from within the transformation team. This case study examines the successful evolution of Symantec's change management practice and the challenges associated with simultaneously managing change across three dimensions: the overall initiative, the projects within the initiative, and the introduction of the change management practice itself.

Key Takeaways:

  1. Recognize transformational change can have many dimensions

  2. Prove the ROI of change management on individual projects by collecting proof and tracking value

  3. Use change management training as a strategic lever and a key influencer

  4. Develop your growth plan, exercise patience, and don't give up
